Women In Weligama

Some women carry strength like an old, familiar song—quiet but unforgettable. It’s in the way they wake before the world, in the way they keep moving forward even when life tries to hold them back. Today, on International Women’s Day, we pause to honor three incredible women—Anula, Subadra, and Amina—who remind us that strength isn’t always loud, but it is always present.

Anula: A Legacy of Hard Work and Family

Anula and her husband brings together the work of artisans whose craft speaks of patience, tradition, and timeless dedication. Their child, who once spent their days absorbing the rhythms of their parents’ work, has now built a beautiful life in Australia, married and happy. And yet, through every carefully chosen piece in their shop, the essence of family, tradition, and love lingers—unbroken by time or distance.

Each morning, as she prepares for the day, her thoughts drift to her 90-year-old mother—a woman who still moves through life with quiet strength. Anula doesn’t wish for extravagance. She wishes for constancy. For the stall to stand strong, for her husband to work beside her, for a life built on love, patience, and the simple joy of carrying forward what was passed down.

Subadra: A Mother’s Fight Against the Odds

Eighteen years. That’s how long Subadra has stood behind her little corn and thambili stall, serving strangers while carrying the weight of a life that hasn’t been kind. Her marriage has been hard. The world of business, even harder. Orders often go to men, opportunities pass her by, and yet, she stays. She stays because she has a son who depends on her.

Her day begins in the early morning, walking her child to school before setting up her stall, hoping today will be a little kinder. By night, she walks home under the cover of darkness, her only companion a torch lighting the path ahead. When asked what she’d say to other women, her voice falters. "Don’t suffer like me," she whispers. "Live a good life." And in those words, she carries the pain of so many—women who fight, who endure, who love fiercely despite the odds.

Amina: Redefining Strength in Hospitality

Amina left Morocco for Weligama, carrying nothing but dreams and determination. As the Guest Relations Officer (GRO) at The Cliff Weligama, she has learned that trust isn’t given freely—it’s something you earn. And for women, sometimes, it takes a little more.

In an industry where credibility must be fought for, she has built her own path, not with grand gestures, but with warmth, patience, and quiet persistence. Her biggest lesson? "Just keep going," she says. "Be strong." And when she thinks of strength, she thinks of her mother—the woman who always told her to do her best, to never hold back. "I love you," she wants to say. Because sometimes, strength is in the smallest, simplest words.

A Tribute to Women Everywhere

These stories are only a glimpse of the countless women who wake before the world, who carry burdens without complaint, who keep moving forward even when life tells them to stop. Their strength is not just in their endurance, but in their kindness, their love, their quiet defiance against the odds.

Women's Day in Weligama

At The Cliff, we celebrate women's day in Weligama—not just today, but everyday. To the mothers, the daughters, the sisters, the dreamers, and the doers—may your voices always be heard, your stories always be told, and your strength always be seen.

Happy Women’s Day.
